GLASS FACTS
Although glass appears to be solid, it
isn't. Technically glass is considered a liquid. In a liquid the
molecules are connected in no special way. In a solid, such as a
grain of sand, the molecules are arranged in an ordered way.
Glass belongs to a group of substances with unique properties
which are termed supercooled liquids, that is, liquid which have
passed into a rigid state without undergoing any noticeable
structural change. Glass may be artificial, (ie man made) but
such volcanic substances as obsidian, are naturally occurring
glasses and all have one property in common: the ultimate
structure of glass is amorphous and not crystalline. By its very
nature glass is inert, totally unreactive and exhibits no
chemical activity whatsoever.
